In April 2017, what began as a small endeavor of fostering a few puppies in the Yucatan quickly evolved into a full-fledged rescue mission. Known affectionately as "the puppy lady," I found myself increasingly involved in the plight of neglected and abused dogs in the region. The overwhelming need for help was evident each time I ventured into town, witnessing the harsh realities of starvation and disease.
First Rescue and the Path Forward
My first significant rescue occurred on December 17, 2017. I encountered Leo the Lionheart, a severely emaciated pittie mix. Despite his dire condition, Leo's healing journey and subsequent transformation inspired me to commit to rescuing as many dogs as possible. This mission has since become a deeply personal endeavor driven by compassion and the urgent necessity to act.
Daily Operations
I have mainly been operating as a one-woman show with the support of a few friends and foster volunteers. I am dedicated to feeding two street packs daily, as well as any other dogs in need of a meal. My home as well as our foster volunteers have housed up to 11 dogs at one time, including those requiring medical care. The work is demanding and often takes a toll on my personal life and finances, but the reward of seeing these animals thrive is invaluable.
Community Involvement and Future Aspirations
We actively participate in spay and neuter release clinics, contributing to controlling the stray population and improving the health of street dogs. We ensure that rescued dogs receive necessary medical attention before being placed in loving homes, many of which are in Canada.
Over the Years
Throughout the years, I have rescued countless street dogs, provided food to thousands, and found loving homes for many, significantly impacting their lives. I am incredibly grateful to the many close friends and volunteers who have supported the cause over the years. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the unwavering support of my husband Stephen Lavergne, all my amazing foster parents and you—my adopters, volunteers, and supporters.
My dream is to establish a dedicated rescue compound with volunteers to provide the care and love these animals deserve. The vision includes educational opportunities for visitors, fostering a greater understanding of rescue life, and facilitating socialization and training for the dogs.
This journey, though challenging, is driven by an unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of these neglected animals, ensuring they receive the care and compassion they have long been denied.
