How does the adoption process work?
Adopting a dog from Mexico to Canada involves a straightforward and transparent process designed to ensure the best match between the dog and the adopting family. Here's what you can expect during the adoption process:
Online Application Process
- Choose Your Dog
Begin by visiting our website to browse the available dogs for adoption. Take your time to learn about each dog's personality, needs, and background to find a suitable match for your family.
- Submit Application
Start by filling out an online adoption application form available on our website. This form collects essential information about your lifestyle, preferences, and experience with pets to help match you with a suitable dog.
- Application Review
Once submitted, the rescue team reviews your application. They assess your readiness to adopt, ensuring you can provide a safe and loving environment for a dog.
- Initial Interviews Matching
If your application is promising, we will contact you to schedule 2 interviews, held 7 days apart with required preparation before the second session. These interviews will be conducted via video call to discuss your application in detail and clarify any questions.
- Matching and Compatibility
Our rescue team will then carefully match you with a dog that aligns with your lifestyle and preferences - even if the dog is not the one you initially had in mind. Our goal is to ensure the best fit for both you and the dog.
Approval and Matching
- Approval
Once we've completed your interviews and determined a good fit, you'll receive your official adoption approval within approximately 3 business days. The duration of the interview process takes roughly 10 days.
- Final Approval
If both parties agree to proceed, you will receive final approval, confirming the match. You will then be required to send the non-refundable $495 CAD vet contribution, which covers essential costs related to the dog's care, crate and collar/tag and health certificates. Please note transportation costs are separate and may vary based on airline as well as departure and arrival locations. Flight arrangements will not be made until contribution has been received.
Transport and Arrival
- Transport Process
The rescue will handle all transport logistics, ensuring the dog travels safely from Mexico to Canada. We primarily coordinate departures from Merida for optimal efficiency. Cancun departures are available when necessary however are not preferred. Please note a $3500 MXN surcharge applies for Cancun routes to cover the additional transportation costs for fuel and tolls.
- Timeline
Transport arrangements typically take 3 weeks to several months to complete. While we prioritize expedited travel, we depend on available flight volunteers travelling to your region who can provide in-transit care until your dog arrives home. During your dogs transportation preparation, we will send you regular photo and video updates and progress reports until they depart. If approved by their foster parent, you can also connect directly. We will keep you involved every step of the way.
- Arrival and Welcome
Upon the dogs arrival in Canada, you will be responsible for picking up your new companion. The rescue will provide you with guidance on the post-arrival protocol, including veterinary check-ups and any necessary measures.
Post-Adoption Support
- Follow-Up and Support
After the adoption, the rescue remains a resource for any questions or support needed as you and your new dog adjust to life together. We can offer advice on health care, training, and behavior. To ensure your rescue dog is thriving in their new home, we require video check-ins 1 week, 1 month, 6 months and 1 year after arrival in Canada.
